My 69 years in chemistry
C. S. Marvel

In 1975, the Biennial Marvel Symposium was instituted by the Southern Arizona Section of the American Chemical Society to honor Professor Marvel.  Now, co-sponsored with the University of Arizona's Chemistry Department, the present Symposium celebrates the late Professor Marvel's life and accomplishments.  The topics of the symposia over the years reflect the broad range of chemical interests of "Speed" Marvel throughout his illustrious career, including synthetic organic chemistry, chemistry of high polymers, rubbers, organometallic compounds, natural products, synthesis of antimalarials, free radicals, rearrangements, hydrogen bonding, biological chemistry, polymer chemistry, and the 2001 Symposium topic of "Supramolecular Materials."  In contemplating the life and spirit of "Speed" Marvel, regrets for the past seem singularly insufficient.  One rather feels a sense of thankfulness and encouragement that throughout so long a life, such a full measure of power, virtuosity, mastery and zest played over our human scene.
