The David F. O'Brien Endowed Fellowship In Chemistry
The David F. O’Brien Fellowship was started in 2002 to commemorate the life and work of Professor O’Brien who passed away at the peak of his career. He is remembered as an outstanding scientist, mentor, friend and role model. He was strong advocate for students and was dedicated to providing them a collegial departmental environment for research through collaborations and opportunities for professional development. Professor O’Brien was born in 1936 in Litchfield Illinois. He graduated from Wabash College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Sciences and from the University of Illinois in 1961 with a PhD in Chemistry. He spent 25 years of his professional life as a research scientist at Eastman Kodak and the last 15 year as a professor of Chemistry at The University of Arizona.
The David F. O’Brien Graduate Fellowship is awarded to a 3rd year graduate student who has demonstrated the ability to carry out independent research in chemistry in a scholarly and enthusiastic way. Key criteria are the quality of seminars, publications, presentations at meetings, and collaboration with others both in and outside of his/her research group. Other aspects of the student’s graduate career such as departmental citizenship and teaching will also be considered.
The Fellowship provides substantial support for a student to attend and present their original work at a Gordon – type Research Conference.
We are still looking to grow this endowment to cover the entire travel costs for a student to attend a research conference.
