Graduate Studies in Chemistry at The University of Arizona

How to Apply to the Chemistry Graduate Program:

 APPLICATION FEE: NONE

The Graduate College application fee for applicants seeking admission to the Graduate Program in Chemistry at The University of Arizona will be paid by the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. Please apply through the Graduate College.

 DEADLINES

Please submit all application materials before January 15 (for U.S. applicants) or January 1 (for international applicants). Application review will begin January 15, and we will continue to accept applications until all positions are filled.
Spring Semester Admission: The majority of our students enter the Graduate Program at the beginning of the fall semester. However, a limited number of applications may be considered for spring semester admission. To be considered for spring admission, your application should be received by October 15.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
  1. Three letters of recommendation. One of the letters must come from your research advisor. These letters should be submitted by your referees using the online system.
  2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended or are currently attending. Transcripts may be uploaded in your online application.
  3. A brief Statement of Purpose, describing your past research experiences, goals, teaching experience and why you want to attend The University of Arizona. This is the same Statement of Purpose that you are asked to submit through the online application.
  4. GRE scores.
    • U.S. applicants: The general GRE exam is required. The chemistry subject exam is recommended but not required.
    • International applicants: Both the general and subject exams are recommended but not required, however students who enter the program have typically taken at least the general exam.
    Be sure to use code 4832 for The University of Arizona and code 0301 for Chemistry. Photocopies of the scores are fine for the initial application review, however, if you are admitted to the program, official scores from ETS are required.
  5. TOEFL scores.

TRANSCRIPTS:

An official transcript from a U.S. college or university is one that has been issued by the institution in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution.

The transcript must contain the official school seal or stamp and the signature of the Registrar. Transfer credits indicated on another school's transcript are not acceptable in lieu of submitting the original institutional record for that coursework.
For international applicants attending colleges or universities abroad, we require a comprehensive record of all study completed or in progress. The record can be in the form of officially certified transcripts or yearly marksheets, including copies of all degree certificates conferred. All foreign-language documents must be accompanied by the certified English translation.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ONLY:

 International applicants from non-English-speaking countries must include TOEFL results. We cannot grant admission to our program without a passing TOEFL score. The TSE (Test of Spoken English) score is not required. TOEFL AND TSE.

Applicants from non-English-speaking countries can not be admitted to The University of Arizona without a passing TOEFL score. 
Minimum TOEFL scores for admission are:

80 (internet-based)
550 (paper-based test)
213 (computer-based test)


TOEFL scores are generally not required from applicants who have completed two (2) years of full-time, upper-division academic study in the U.S. or have received a bachelor's degree or higher from an institution in the United States, English-speaking provinces of Canada, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand. However, if you have been residing outside these countries since completing your study or earning your degree, you may be required to submit a current TOEFL score.

A TSE score is not required for an application for graduate studies to be considered. Admitted students will have to pass an on-campus English language test when they arrive at the University of Arizona.

TOEFL results are valid for two (2) years from the test date to the semester of admission. Official scores can be sent to The University of Arizona by request from TOEFL, Box 899-TR, Princeton, NJ, 08540, USA (the institution code for The University of Arizona is 4832). Institutional testscores on speaking exams will not be accepted from institutions outside the State of Arizona.

For married students with an accompanying spouse:* If your spouse does not intend to work, you should obtain an F-2 visa for him/her as outlined above.

* If your spouse intends to work, you should obtain a J-1 visa for yourself and a J-2 visa for your spouse. To obtain a J-1 visa, contact the Department of Chemistry Business Office at 520-621-6342 or e-mail chemistry@arizona.edu.

APPLICANTS FROM INDIA, PAKISTAN AND BANGLADESH:

Before the committee can consider your application, we must have copies of each yearly marksheet beginning the first year after your Secondary School Certificate to present study. For graduate admission, we must have proof of a M.A., M.Sc., Bachelor of Engineering, or Bachelor of Technology awarded in at least the Upper Secondary Class. Your yearly marksheets and supporting certificates must be certified by an appropriate official of the issuing institution to substantiate having passed all examinations leading to a degree.

Copies of all diplomas or degrees awarded are also required and must be certified by the issuing institution. Credentials certified by anyone other than a university official will not be acceptable, nor will photocopies without the original seals and signatures. Upon receipt of the requested information and completion of the remaining requirements for admission consideration, we shall be able to further review your application. We note that not all universities compute overall weighted average and rank in class.

VISAS: All students will receive an I-20 form from the Graduate College. This form is to be used to apply for an F-1 visa. For additional questions about visa procedures, you may contact the Office of International Student Programs and Services.

RELEASE OF APPLICANT INFORMATION:

Your personal and educational records are not accessible for release to anyone else without your written consent unless authorized by law. If you wish to have a third party represent you during the admission process, please name that person in a letter accompanying your application package.
