A brief review of small molecule light emitting devices (SMOLEDs) will be highlighted by reference to some examples of small particle semiconductor clusters and cyclometallated Ir compounds as the emissive layer in such devices. A discussion of synthetic approaches to these materials will be augmented by some device performance data indicating high electrical efficiency and color tuning of the emission can be controlled by chemical substitution of the basic structures.  Attaching such materials to, or doping them into charge transporting polymeric materials provides hybrid SMOLED/polymer materials amenable to polymer processing techniques for device fabrication.
