Student Lab Safety
Students are required to sign a Safety Agreement, which can be found in their lab manual. By doing so, they indicate that they understand and agree that, in order to work in a chemistry lab, they are required to do the following:
- Wear approved safety goggles and a lab coat at all times when any experimental work is being done by anyone in the lab.
- Protect themselves by wearing appropriate clothing in the lab. Closed shoes are required; open-top shoes or sandals are prohibited. Wear appropriate gloves when handling hazardous chemicals.
- Become familiar with the location and proper operation of the safety shower, the eyewash stations, and the fire extinguisher.
- Obey all instructions concerning the safe performance of experiments. Use the hood when required, dispose of all chemicals and other materials as instructed, and promptly return all chemicals and reagents to their appropriate places when finished. Protect against the contamination of reagents and chemicals.
- Do not attempt any unauthorized experiments nor work in the lab without proper supervision.
- Understand that the University does not provide liability insurance coverage for students and that they are responsible for the financial burden of injuries that may be incurred during this class.
Preproom employees may remind students of these policies. Instructors may eject students and issue a failing grade if these policies are not followed.
