Interphase Partition: The Central Idea

Certain analytical techniques are based on the capacity of a chemical substance to distribute or partition between two different phases that are in contact with each other. The differential distribution of a substance between two phases can be used as the differentiating characteristic to separate it from other components.

When a mixture of two or more components is placed in contact with a system in a different phase, molecules of the various chemical species move across the interface. The final distribution of molecules in each of the two phases is strongly influenced by the strength of the interactions between different particles in the system.
