Overview

Volumetric measurements are another important part of a chemist's work with mass measurements. A volumetric measuring device is any container that will contain a known volume when filled to the mark.

One issue that need to be considered when accurate measurement is desired is to determine when the surface of the liquid is at the mark. When a water solution is poured into a glass container, it "wets" the sides of the of the container. The resulting curved surface is known as a meniscus. All volumetric glassware is designed to be read at the bottom of the meniscus.
