Undergraduate Chemistry Degree Programs
BS CHEM
In addition to UA graduation requirements, the BS in chemistry involves three semesters of calculus, two semesters of calculus-based physics with labs, and about 56 units of core chemistry course work. BS students complete courses involving:
- general chemistry
- organic chemistry
- quantitative analysis
- instrumental analysis
- physical chemistry
- inorganic chemistry
- and biochemistry
Students choose six units of chemistry electives from a variety of choices which may include independent research, preceptorship, internship, among other traditional lecture and lab courses.
BA CHEM
The BA CHEM requires two semesters of calculus,
two semesters of algebra or calculus-based physics with labs, and 35-37
units of core chemistry course work, in addition to other UA graduation
requirements. BA students complete courses
involving:
- general chemistry
- organic chemistry
- quantitative analysis
- and physical chemistry
- and will select an area of focus involving a two-course sequence from instrumental analysis, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, or organic synthesis to complete the major.
BSC SCED CHM
In addition to other UA graduation requirements, this program requires two semesters of calculus, two semesters of calculus-based physics with labs, 27 units in science teaching; 3 units in science pedagogy, and 12 units of science electives, along with 24 units of core chemistry course work including:
- general chemistry
- organic chemistry
- quantitative analysis
- chemistry lab safety
- and one semester of physical chemistry
- plus 11 chemistry elective units
In their last year of this program, education students spend time as a student teacher in a local school to get experience working in the classroom. Vicente Talanquer is the major advisor for students in the Science Education program.
CHEM Minor
The chemistry minor requires 20 units of chemistry as specified in the CHEM minor APRR for your catalog year.
Please note the following:
- Many departments restrict the double-use of courses (double-dipping) between their major and a minor. Your major department may require you to complete unique course(s) to complete the CHEM minor if you have several chemistry courses already embedded in your major requirements. See your major department first.
- If you are using CHEM as Tier One NATS, please realize that UA policy prohibits the double-use of Tier 1 courses in your minor (with a few exceptions). See http://www.gened.arizona.edu/gened/policies/multipleuse.html for the policy.
- If you are transferring chemistry courses to be used toward the minor, please know that the Department of Chemistry applies only 8 units for the general chemistry sequence and 8 units for the organic chemistry sequence, regardless of how many units your school provided for these sequences. Additional units are elective only and will not be counted toward this minor.
- As per UA policy, students must have a GPA in the minor of at least 2.0 to earn the minor. This requires that at least one 3-unit minor course be completed at UA.
- To have this minor added to your degree plan, send your request along with your name and SID to Robin Rarick. You may also contact Robin for minor approval at degree-check time.
