Undergraduate Chemistry Program
Undergraduate Degrees
The Department of Chemistry offers two degree programs with majors in Chemistry- the Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Arts. The Bachelor of Science (BS CHEM) leads to certification by the American Chemical Society, and the names of our graduates are on file at the Society’s headquarters. This well-rounded program is recommended for those who enjoy a rigorous scientific program, are interested in pursuing graduate school in chemistry (or a closely related discipline), wish to work in industrial or government labs, or who are pursuing professional careers in chemistry. Graduates of the BS CHEM program are highly sought, well paid, and enjoy excellent career flexibility.
Our Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry (BA CHEM) is a more liberal arts degree and is designed for students planning to pursue professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, law, business, or pharmacy; and for those requiring more course flexibility as to integrate courses from an interdisciplinary standpoint.
The College of Science also offer a Bachelors degree program in Science Education with a Chemistry option (BSC SCED CHM) for those wishing to teach chemistry at the middle or high school level. The College of Science Teacher Preparation Program allows its majors to integrate chemistry and other science courses with science pedagogy courses, and engage in student teaching in the senior year. Students earn their teaching certificate upon graduation.
Research
Roughly 40-60% of undergraduate chemistry majors conduct cutting-edge research with our faculty, and students are encouraged to be involved with research as early as freshman year! By starting early, students get the opportunity to accomplish a great deal by graduation. Excellent research experience sets these students apart from the competition for higher-end jobs and graduate student positions around the country.
