KSD Student Learning Objects are addressed in this lesson: A. Each group of four students will initially use the 5 Question Strategy to develop a question and rough idea of the experiment they will conduct. The five questions are as follows. A. The instructor will guide the students as groups through the 5 question strategy. laboratory equipment portable computers - 486s Vernier Probeware & Software See interactions above. A rubric will be provided detailing the criteria of the project. It will include the following: This unit of practice was created by Vince Howard of Kentridge High School in the Kent School District. Tasks
1. What topic do you wish to conduct an experiment upon?
2. What materials are readily available?
3. What aspects can be varied to possibly influence the behavior of the subject matter?
4. What aspects of the subject matter can be measured to determine the effect of any experimental change?
5. Choose an aspect to vary and another to measure as your experimental framework.
B. The students will next explore the experimental probeware and software available to see how it works and imagine how they can fit it into their experiment.
C. The students will then design stepwise a procedure for their experiment which controls or maintains all possible influences not chosen for change.
D. The students will obtain the necessary materials for their experiment both independently & as available from the instructor.
E. The students will then conduct their experiment in the laboratory.
F. The students will analyze their results and present them in front of class with the aid of a computer / television interface.
Interactions
B. The instructor will make available the computers and probeware to the students. Roles will be determined including - software specialist, experimental set up, documenter, and supplier. Students will be given class time to explore the software & equipment while designing their experimental procedure. The instructor will be available to consult with the students during this time.
C. Each group will be required to submit a set of procedures for review by the instructor.
D. The instructor will supply materials if available. The students will be responsible for obtaining other materials themselves.
E. Time will be made available during class or after school for students to conduct their experiment when the instructor will be available for consultation.
F. Students will present there findings in front of class while the instructor, peers, & group members evaluate the presentation.
